Walls donât work.
I mean, it shouldnât be a surprise since people have spent millennia going under, over, and around them, and yeah, this one is made of pillows, so itâs already got some structural deficiencies. But still. Here I am. Half on top of Beau with the pillows I carefully stacked last night scattered on the ground or at the foot of the bed. Bubba got in on the shuffle, cuddling against my other side.
Thank god heâs upgraded the bed into a king-size one.
I sigh, not bothering to move from my position even though Iâm being cooked between the twin furnaces of Beau and Bubba. Itâs too late to move now for virtueâs sake, and I really enjoy this sandwich. Temperature notwithstanding.
The sigh wakes up Beau, who groggily picks his head up and takes in the tableau. âWho beat the wall?â
âBoth of us?â Thatâs not verified, but it would be nice if I wasnât the only one who was affected by the close proximity.
He pulls me in closer and I let him, ending up on his chest. âNow I get to show you the best Christmas,â Beau says.
âOh no. Weâve already had the best Christmas. But we can still have a very nice Christmas.â I pat him on the chest.
âYou canât make up your mind before I show you my events.â
âYes, I can. When youâve had filet mignon, you donât need to have a fast-food burger to know the filetâs better. But that burger can still be enjoyable. Itâs just not going to be objectively better.â
He rolls out from under me, ignoring my flawless metaphor. Doesnât he know that heâs the best part of a Southern Christmas? If so, why is he moving further away?
âWait until you see what Iâve got planned for you first.â Beau rubs his hands together.
Is it to get a hotel so we can have sex? Because thatâd be a great plan.
I begrudgingly get out of bed and get ready. I cross fingers, toes, legs, arms, and any other miscellaneous body parts that his family has things to do and I get some more alone time with Beau.
When we get downstairs, thereâs a delicious breakfast spread set up for us. Eggs, pancakes, grits, bacon, biscuits and gravy, and an entire pitcher of sweet tea. Well, the dayâs already looking better, even if my luck didnât hold that much and we arenât alone. Beauâs mom and dad are already at the table, halfway through their plates while we make our own.
âYou going out to the mulch supplier today? Iâve got to head to the hiring fair for the upcoming season, so Iâm glad you could come back,â Reed says to Beau.
Oh yeah, the mulch. I had sort of forgotten why we were here instead of ordering room service from The Plaza right now.
Beau nods. âYeah. Hopefully Iâll be able to get it out of the way and then I can show Sonia how much better a South Carolina Christmas is than a New York Christmas.â
Eve chokes on her eggs, needing a large gulp of her sweet tea before she can talk freely again.
